Translation[edit]

@User:Whatamidoing (WMF), please let me know when the draft template can be removed, and whether you'd like help with tagging the page for translation. Best, --Elitre (WMF) (talk) 10:06, 31 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

I have been considering this question today, and I don't think I'm ready yet. I've made current screenshots for almost everything until Help:VisualEditor/User guide#Editing templates, and I made a few changes to the page in that process. I think I should finish making the screenshots (and therefore fix any other problems that I discover) before we mark it up. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 17:41, 31 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

on en.wiki[edit]

User:Whatamidoing (WMF), I though you had made this page for screenshot purposes, but now it looks like the automated bot is using en:Screenshot/fodder instead? --Elitre (WMF) (talk) 10:02, 1 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

It looks like that was set up by User:Jeff G., who probably had no idea that another option was available. If he likes it, then he's welcome to export it. (It's all public domain, so there are no licensing/attribution requirements.) Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 04:27, 4 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Whatamidoing (WMF) and Elitre (WMF): I actually made two options, that in mainspace (albeit in a pseudo folder) and testwiki:Lorem ipsum text (which is not as clean / production-looking as this wiki and en.wiki, but I could protect it there). Are the screenshots supposed to be specific to English Wikipedia? If it helps, I hereby release my work on both pages into the Public Domain, as well as via GFDL 1.2, GFDL 1.3, CC-0, and all CC-BY and other licenses accepted by WMF projects.   — Jeff G. ツ 13:21, 4 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Whatamidoing (WMF) and Elitre (WMF): Export what to where? Sorry, too many indefinite pronouns and too many of my typos, repinging.   — Jeff G. ツ 13:26, 4 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
This page is marked for translation, which means that if you want to make a plain old wikitext copy of it (without all the translation markup), then you have to "export" it. You want this URL: https://www.mediawiki.org/w/index.php?title=Special:ExportTranslations&language=en&group=page-Help%3ASample+page It will give you a page that shows the plain wikitext, which you can copy and paste. IMO the main advantage to using this is that you get (almost) one of every kind of article content that you might need for making screenshots. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 16:33, 4 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Whatamidoing (WMF) and Elitre (WMF): I get error "The specified export format is not supported by the message group." doing that for English in native format. Also, I need help defending at w:Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Screenshot/fodder.   — Jeff G. ツ 13:14, 8 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
I don't know what caused that error for you, so I've made a 'clean' copy. You can copy it from User:Whatamidoing_(WMF)/Sandbox. Feel free to edit however you want. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 20:57, 8 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Whatamidoing (WMF): Thanks. We could certainly copy User:Whatamidoing (WMF)/Sandbox to en:Screenshot/fodder, assuming the latter survives at AfD.   — Jeff G. ツ 02:38, 9 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Avoid templates[edit]

Just a note for anyone who comes looking for it: This page needs to work on any MediaWiki installation, which means that it needs to work on sites that don't have Template:ISBN or other things that are common on Wikipedias. Please avoid adding templates unless you need that template to demonstrate something about wikitext that isn't already elsewhere in the page. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 22:59, 2 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
