Layout codes

Layout codes are characters that:

• Separate hieroglyphs
• Indicate the organization of the hieroglyphs in space (that is, the position of hieroglyphs in a block)

Example: <hiero>a-p:t-q</hiero> gives

General text layout codes

(-) Inline separator

The official hieroglyph separator is the hyphen character ("-", also called block separator) but you are also allowed to use a space because it is a widespread practice.

(!) Forced line break

To make a new line of text, use the exclamation character ("!"). Normally, the "end-of-line" must be surrounded by separators (as -!-), but space or nothing are also allowed.

Blanks

A dot (".") represents a half-group blank; two dots ("..") represent a one-group blank. Blanks are not fully functional, as attempting to stack a glyph on top of a blank does not give the expected result. The code H_SPACE can be used instead as a workaround.

Placeholders

There are two additional characters that can be used if you are digitizing an inscription and the original Hieroglyphs used are now lost or severely damaged. To use the Placeholders add ("HASH") for the short version and ("hatching") for the long version. Both characters must have separators just like other glyphs.

(\) Mirrored glyphs

To mirror a glyph, add the backslash character ("\") immediately after its code, with no intervening separator.

(V) Vertical rotation

To rotate a long, thin glyph to take less space, add the letter "V" immediately after its code, with no intervening separator. This convention supports only a few select characters. Gardiner codes for these forms are not supported.

(<,>) Cartouche

To add a Cartouche, add the Less-than character ("<") and a Greater-than character (">") on the left and right side of the glyphs you would like to surround with a Cartouche. The Cartouche sign must have separators just like other glyphs and you cannot only use one of them, if a Cartouche sign is only present on one side then the Hieroglyphs will not function.

You may also use the open Cartouche ("V10A") and close Cartouche ("V11A") glyphs directly but this is usually not recommended because it does not add a border to the top and bottom however, it does provide one advantage; if you directly use the Cartouche glyphs it is possible to add one to only a single side allowing you to create a Cartouche that does not close.

Block composition codes

(:) Superposition

To superpose hieroglyphs, use the colon character (":") instead of the hyphen.

(*) Juxtaposition

To juxtapose hieroglyphs, use the asterisk character ("*"). Juxtaposing hieroglyphs is only relevant when they are part of a block which is superposed.

Hieroglyphs

There are two ways of encoding hieroglyphs:

• using Gardiner's sign list code (e.g. A12)
• with the more frequent phonemes (e.g. xA)

you can also use characters by using codes of one, two or more letters.

A hieroglyph is encoded by:

• a letter that represents the category;
• a number that represents rank within the category.
