উইকিমিডিয়া প্রকল্পগুলোতে যে কেউ সম্পাদনা করতে পারে, একাউন্ট তৈরি করুক বা না করুক। যখন নিবন্ধিত একাউন্ট দিয়ে কোনো সম্পাদনা করা হয়, সেই সম্পাদনার কৃতিত্ব বিভিন্ন তালিকা ও পাতায় যেমন সাম্প্রতিক পরিবর্তন বা পাতার ইতিহাসে সংশ্লিষ্ট একাউন্টের নামে প্রদর্শিত হয়। অনুরূপভাবে কোনো অ্যাকাউন্ট ছাড়া সম্পাদনা করা হলে সেই সম্পাদনার কৃতিত্ব স্বয়ংক্রিয়ভাবে তৈরি হওয়া একটি অস্থায়ী অ্যাকাউন্টের নামে প্রদর্শিত হয়। একটি অস্থায়ী একাউন্ট লগ-আউট থাকা সম্পাদকের পক্ষে তৈরি হয় এবং এটি ৯০ দিনের জন্য সক্রিয় থাকে। একই ডিভাইস থেকে পরবর্তী সব সম্পাদনার কৃতিত্ব একই অস্থায়ী অ্যাকাউন্টের নামে প্রদর্শিত হবে।
কেন অস্থায়ী একাউন্ট প্রয়োজনীয়?

We restrict access to IP address data for temporary accounts to users who need this access for anti-abuse moderation purposes. The access criteria for this data are articulated in a legal policy called Access to temporary account IP addresses. The IP address used at the time of each edit will be stored for 90 days after the edit. After 90 days, this data will be deleted from our databases. Notable aspects of temporary accounts
- Temporary accounts are different from registered accounts. They are short-lived and offer limited features. We don't collect any additional data for temporary accounts beyond what we collect for regular edits.[clarification needed]
- Temporary accounts do not have access to all the features available for logged-in users. Some actions, such as uploading photos to Commons, are restricted to users with a registered account.
- Temporary accounts have their own user pages and user talk pages, but when such accounts expire, the person that used that account can no longer be reached by placing messages there. In general, a temporary account and a (subsequent) regular user account could be linked. But because of the possible delink, it is technically not allowed in some projects to edit the user page of a temporary account after it has expired or was permanently blocked.

Creating a permanent account
At any moment, you can choose to create a registered, permanent account. Registered accounts provide the best privacy protection, and offer many preference settings for customization. Registering a permanent account is quick and easy. You do not need an e-mail address to create a registered account. Your edits and other activity will not be carried forward. You can link from your new registered account user page to your old temporary account user page, by redirecting from the temporary to the registered account.
