Growth/Personalized first day/Structured tasks/Add an image/2025 algorithm test/ur
Hello, and thank you for supporting the Growth team!
📸 Did you know many Wikipedia articles are missing images, even though images make articles more engaging and informative?
✍️ Meanwhile, newcomers often find it challenging to get started with editing and benefit from structured, beginner-friendly tasks.
What if we could tackle both of these challenges with a single task? Read on to discover the “Add an Image” Newcomer task, and how you can help us improve and scale this task to more Wikipedias!
We need your assistance to test the algorithm used to suggest images. Our goal is to have multiple testers to increase the diversity or views. This task covers the following languages: ar, de, es, en, fr, id, it, ja, pl, ru, sw, ky, tw, vi, zh.
Project basics
- Algorithm: The Structured Content team developed an Image Suggestions algorithm. This algorithm leverages data from Wikidata and Structured Data on Commons to find potential images to add on unillustrated Wikipedia articles. (More algorithm info).
- Newcomer Structured Task: The Growth team uses these Image Suggestions to create a Newcomer friendly task called “Add an Image”. The “Add an Image” task is a Structured Task; Structured tasks are meant to break down editing tasks into step-by-step workflows that make sense for newcomers and make sense on mobile devices.
- Newcomer impact: The “Add an Image” task has been shown to lead to an increase in newcomer participation on the mobile web platform, particularly by making constructive (non-reverted) article edits: "Add an image" Experiment Analysis.
- Wikipedia impact: So far, the “Add an Image” task has been used to add images to over 90,000 articles! However, it is currently available on 11 Wikipedias.
- What’s Next? We plan to expand the “Add an Image” task to more Wikipedias. First, we need to test the algorithm on a representative sample of wikis to ensure it works well across different communities.
What you can help with
We are testing using a tool developed by Wikimedia Foundation’s research team.
This tool is created to check if the image would be a good fit for the article. The image should be relevant to the topic, as it adds value to it, and, ideally, increases the comprehension of the topic.
Here’s what we need you to do:
- Visit alis-evaluation.toolforge.org/ and select your language
- Note: This is not the service for the final “Add an Image” task—it’s just for testing.
- Review image suggestions and categorize them:
- Good: The suggestion improves the article and would likely be accepted by patrollers.
- Bad: The suggestion would likely be reverted by patrollers.
- Skip: You’re unsure about the suggestion and would likely skip it.
- Please skip articles with infoboxes.
- Please skip images you already saw during the test (duplicates)
- Our Goal: Review 500 suggestions per language included in this test. You can review them yourself or ask volunteers in your language community to help.
- Share additional feedback: Write down any reoccurring issues you noticed with suggestions that you notice on the talk page. We will use this feedback to consider further improvements to the task.
