Custom "Name" on UI

Hello,

Thanks for this extension wich make easy to use LLM on mediawiki and keep semantic and elasticsearch advantages.

If possible, it will be usefull to rename it according to the sitename or customizable to fit in on local context instead of "Wanda AI assistant".

In my version install, i have "⧼wanda-name⧽" may you chack if there is a mistake on project naming of extention?

Sorry about those problems. I believe both of these are fixed now: "Wanda AI Assistant" is no longer hardcoded, so it can be changed; and there are now values for the "wanda-name" message, so it shows up correctly in Special:Version. Yaron Koren (talk) 14:36, 23 October 2025 (UTC)

After updating from https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/mediawiki/extensions/Wanda, it can run now, but the retrieval performance is not very good. Is there any additional configuration needed?

Am I correct that Wanda only takes context from one article?

And then forwards this context with the user's question to LLM.

Wanda vs WikiChat & Wiki Community proposal

How does Wanda compare to WikiChat?

Could it be used to do the things in the potential applications listed in this wish in the Wikimedia Community Wishlist?: W442: Adopt Wikipedia-trained WikiChat LLM & make it learn about help pages & categories to help newcomers.

If you're interested in Wanda and increasing its adoption, I suggest you keep track of that wish. It's not yet open for voting. Would it be better to make the wish a bit broader and change the title to remove "WikiChat"? Maybe Wanda or another AI model could also be used for things described there. Lastly, a link to the extension could be added to the wish if it could be used for implementing what's described there (such as helping users find categories and help pages). WikiChat is for Wikipedia specifically, while Wanda is for whatever wiki it's installed on. Your wish/proposal seems to be about using AI to help editors, while Wanda uses AI to answer questions about the content, i.e. to help readers. Although there are Wanda spinoff extensions, WandaScore and WandaScribe, that do the former, and there could be more in the future. Yaron Koren (talk) 02:50, 12 November 2025 (UTC)

• I wonder if Wanda is for whatever wiki it's installed on, wouldn't it also work with Wikipedia and Commons?
• The wish is about adopting a LLM and then adjusting it for further applications. WikiChat already answers questions about the content so I specified one of the or the main missing domain of functionalities that would be added: helping editors. Moreover, the help/guidance/answer about categories for example is not just for editors but also for readers (so they can quickly find the category about exactly what kind of things they're looking for even if they don't have much experience with categories or searching).
• So far it does seem like theoretically Wanda could be adopted or spinoffs be created that are 1. integrated into Wikimedia projects like English Wikipedia and 2. also give answers about things on meta, help, category, and talk pages. If that's incorrect, please let me know. I think I'll add a note about Wanda to the linked wish.

That's true, if Wanda were ever to be installed on Wikipedia or Commons, then it could potentially handle any of their needed AI functionality. I don't think Wanda can currently handle questions like "What are the recommended categories for this page?", but potentially it (or a spinoff extension) could in the future. Well it may be better to focus first of all on the potential of it to help newcomers when they have questions about things that are answered in (to them) hard-to-find meta pages, help pages, and VillagePump discussions etc. The application for categories may be more difficult to implement.

WandaScore and WandaScribe are not the kind of tools I'm interested in or that relate to the wish. It seems like only Wanda can be used with an open source AI (and only Ollama) which is not the case for WikiChat so I was thinking of renaming the wish somehow (maybe also changing its scope) e.g. by changing WikiChat to WikiChat/Wanda or by not naming any software in the title and possibly even removing the "Adopt", leaving open the possibility of building something. What do you think of that? I don't see why it would be so unlikely for an improved version of this extension (or a fork of it) to be integrated in Wikimedia sites, maybe starting with some smaller language Wikipedia but you could elaborate so maybe these issues could be addressed or considered (in the wish or otherwise). Well, there's a general strong aversion among WMF developers to installing extensions developed outside the WMF on Wikimedia sites. Although it should be noted that that would prevent WikiChat from being installed as well! So it might make sense to just change it to "LLM", and leave out any names, since presumably the key thing you want is the LLM, not necessarily a specific solution. On the other hand, WMF developers (and Wikipedia editors) have so far had a strong aversion to LLMs in general, so it might not matter that much what you write. Also shown: an option to ask it by entering q + question into Wikipedia search
