Post your feedback about using the first iteration of the 2017 wikitext editor as a Beta Feature.

If you are reporting a problem directly on this page, please include your web browser, computer operating system, and wiki skin (usually Vector, sometimes Monobook). Also, while editing to reproduce a problem, please try to append &safemode=1 at the end of the URL; if the problem disappears, you are using a gadget or script that interferes with the editor.

The Editing team welcomes your feedback and ideas, especially on user interface decisions and the priorities for adding new features. All comments are read, in any language, but personal replies are not guaranteed.

We are trying to keep the page tidy by providing links to relevant tasks while closing threads. You can help by adding {{tracked|T######}}. By all means, feel free to re-open a thread if you need to!

Cant Edit a Redirect

[edit]

It is not possible to edit a redirect page with this editor, you will infact be redirected to whatever article it points to.

Using chrome, vector wiki skin, this should be easy to reproduce since I wasn't using any scripts. the problem was gone the moment i turned this new editor off in beta settings. A Den Jentyl Ettien Avel Dysklyver (talk) 14:16, 7 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Italia&redirect=no&veaction=editsource works for me - I only tried in Safari though. (Where you trying to edit a protected redirect, by chance?) Elitre (WMF) (talk) 16:15, 7 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
I didn't think to check, i got anther user to remove the redirect do i could edit the article. acton castle 86.176.247.36 (talk) 19:10, 7 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
I have the exact same problem. When I try to edit a redirect, I'm automatically redirected to the target page for edition. The page is not protected.
Using the above workaround though (direct link with "action=editsource"), it works, but this is a big issue if we have to manually enter the URL...
The problem happens on the french WP for me. Epok (talk) 18:05, 6 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
I know right same thing for me@Epok Dominic1456 (talk) 19:51, 21 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Epok, please provide specific page of example, browser, operating system and WP skin details. Merci! Elitre (WMF) (talk) 18:08, 6 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
The problem appears with any redirect page (though I only tested it with templates for now), such as this page: https://fr.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Mod%C3%A8le:Utilisateur_Biblioth%C3%A9caire&redirect=no.
Browser: Firefox Quantum (57.0.1) - 64 bits
OS: Windows 10 (latest insider version: 1709 - 17046.10000) - 64 bits
WP skin details: Vector - no custom template (existing, but empty).
Thanks for replying so quickly! Epok (talk) 18:13, 6 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Jdforrester (WMF) commented here on what's the expected behavior.
Again, I can't reproduce, as in, when I click on the URL you provided, no matter if I use the 2017 or the 2010 wikitext editor, I always end up editing "Modèle:Utilisateur Bibliothécaire". I'm in Chrome Version 62.0.3202.94 (Official Build) (64-bit) now.
I see that yet another task on this topic has been opened. @Deskana (WMF), I guess we need to investigate more. Elitre (WMF) (talk) 19:11, 6 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
Ok, I believe Diwas helped us crack this open. Elitre (WMF) (talk) 09:33, 19 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
U guys are smart especially u @Elitre (WMF) Dominic1456 (talk) 19:53, 21 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
I could reproduce the same issue with an alternative flow.
=== Steps to reproduce ===
  1. Open Italia redirect page.
  2. Hold the Ctrl key (or it's equivalent).
  3. Tap on the Edit Source link. This should try to open the link in a new tab (which works at least in FF and Chrome)
=== Expected results ===
The Italia redirect page is loaded for source editing in the new tab (at least in browsers that support the shortcut)
=== Actual results ===
The Italy page is loaded for source editing.
=== Hypothesis ===
This seems to be because the Edit Source link in a redirect page doesn't contain the &redirect=no fragment in it.
=== Notes ===
  1. This doesn't happen with the Edit link which also doesn't have the &redirect=no fragment in it.
  2. I have the Temporarily disable the visual editor while it is in beta option unchecked Kaartic [talk] 17:01, 20 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
OK, it seems this is essentially T181110. Kaartic [talk] 17:04, 20 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
I'm also having this issue. I prefer the non-visual editor in general so I'm probably going to have to skip trying out these beta features until this is fixed. Thanks for looking into it!  - PaulT+/C 01:33, 19 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

Preview interface

[edit]

I don't like the preview interface. I prefer the source editor where the preview is above the edit window. When you click the preview changes button, then click save changes, you are not prompted to enter an edit summary. β€” pythoncoder  (talk | contribs) 15:11, 22 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

If you click "Save changes", then it saves with the edit summary that you entered in the previous dialog – which may be none. To enter an edit summary, click "Return to save form" at the bottom of the dialog box.
You may want to go to w:Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing and turn on "Prompt me when entering a blank edit summary". Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 18:24, 22 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

Those are currently only available in the visual editing mode (because they need to "understand" the page to let you edit them). You can switch by clicking on the "pencil" icon drop-down to the right if you want to access those tools. It would need at least phab:T102867 and probably a bunch more work to be do-able, I'm afraid.
