We've selected Blazegraph as our platform and RDF/SPARQL as the underlying technology we will be basing on.

In November we reached out to the authors of Titan, OrientDB, and ArangoDB to discuss using them to power graph queries against Wikidata. In December we prototyped against Titan and and OrientDB, skipping ArangoDB due to lack of time and some miscommunication about being able to contribute upstream. In early January we settled on Titan. In January the plan is to take the Titan prototype and bring it out of prototype-ness: adding tests, upgrading to the most recent version of Titan, and building easy to use tools around loading and updating Wikidata.

In December we picked a backend for the query engine. Unfortunately in early February that choice became less good when its primary developers were snapped up by another company and they said they'll have "less time" to work on it. Sad. We've reopened the investigation for backends.
