Just a note[edit]

Hi Jackmcbarn. Thanks for your help in getting rid of nonsense pages on this wiki. Much appreciated. :) Trijnstel (talk) 12:43, 13 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

User→User talk fix[edit]

That's the second time I've done that recently despite the fact that I've been editing various wikis for years. I think I'm losing it. Thanks for the spot and the fix! – RobinHood70 talk 07:06, 13 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

If you take a look at this discussion at Talk:Flow you will see that this page is indeed part of a sandbox experiment. I'm not just creating nonsensically named pages for fun -- the Flow software is creating these pages. By all means delete and protect it if you see fit, but it is part of the evidence I am putting reporting for a possible bug. Deltahedron (talk) 06:44, 22 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Identity theft[edit]

Hi Jack,

seems like the content you were referring to has been deleted, but thank you for noticing :)

Ahh I see now, if you view the revision history you'll see that the user has copied and pasted my user page, not with bad intent, but rather to copy the layout, rather than my info, you just stumbled upon it before he was able add his own info.

Translation of the sidebar items[edit]

In Project:Current_issues#Translation_of_the_sidebar_items_49088 I only request to translate the home MediaWiki sidebar, you said that you were to translatewiki.net... but where? -> not exists a specific location for it in Translating:MediaWiki in translatewiki.net!. Then I've noticed that nobody translates these elements of MediaWiki (only exists a Russian translation). This is a shame!!.

If you have no solution that I can go?. Thanks.

--Jmarchn (talk) 18:13, 10 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

@Jmarchn: You want to change the sidebar on this wiki specifically? We don't currently have a good way set up to do that, so just post somewhere what you want it to be, and I'll add it to the interface page for you. Jackmcbarn (talk) 04:33, 11 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Not for me, for all Catalan users! (ca):

  • Get MediaWiki -> Descàrrega de MediaWiki
  • Get extensions -> "Obtenir extensions" (Note: literal translation) -> "Extensions per a MediaWiki" or "Extensions" (Note: The best translation according to content)
  • Tech blog -> Blog de tecnologia
  • Contribute -> Com contribuir
  • Support -> Assistència
    • Technical manual -> Manual tècnic
    • Support desk -> Taula d'assistència
    • Communication -> Comunicació
  • Development -> Desenvolupament
    • Bug tracker -> Seguiment d'errors
    • Browse repository -> Repositori (Note: "Browse" isn't necessary to translate)
    • Code docs -> Documentació del codi
    • Bugs with patch -> Errors registrats
    • Statistics -> Estadístiques
    • Wikimedia engineering -> Enginyeria de Wikimedia
  • MediaWiki.org
    • Browse categories -> Buscar per categories
    • Current issues -> Temes actuals
    • Sandbox -> Proves de l'usuari

Also, in main page, after "For general questions about MediaWiki see the communication page or ask at the support desk.", the item " Help and support" isn't translated -> "Ajuda i assistència" or (only) "Ajuda".

For Spanish language (es)

  • Get MediaWiki -> Descarga de MediaWiki
  • Get extensions -> "Obtener extensiones" (Note: literal translation) -> "Extensiones para MediaWiki" or "Extensiones" (Note: The best translation according to content)
  • Tech blog -> Blog de tecnología
  • Contribute -> Cómo contribuir
  • Support -> Asistencia
    • Technical manual -> Manual técnico
    • Support desk -> Mesa de asistencia
    • Communication -> Comunicación
  • Development -> Desarrollo
    • Bug tracker -> Seguimiento de errores
    • Browse repository -> Repositorio (Note: "Browse" isn't necessary to translate)
    • Code docs -> Documentación del código
    • Bugs with patch -> Errores registrados
    • Statistics -> Estadísticas
    • Wikimedia engineering -> Ingeniería de Wikimedia
  • MediaWiki.org
    • Browse categories -> Buscar por categorías
    • Current issues -> Temas actuales
    • Sandbox -> Pruebas del usuario

Very Thanks! --Jmarchn (talk) 18:12, 12 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

@Jmarchn: I've made most of these changes, but I have questions about some of them. For "Browse repository", why is "Browse" not necessary to translate? Also, the following messages were all already translated into Spanish, with different translations than you provided: "Get MediaWiki", "Support", "Bug tracker", "Browse categories", and "Sandbox". Are your new translations better than the existing ones? Jackmcbarn (talk) 18:57, 12 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

In first place, I'm sorry for my intermediate English level.

  • An repository, in Catalan (like English) is a place with objects. In the referred page of MediaWiki is a page with code of MediaWiki as a folder tree. I think the name of this place should be "MediaWiki code repository", or or simpler: "Code repository", but maybe in the context of the phrase (in English) is unnecessary word "code". In any repository (always) you will find the desired object, therefore the word "browse" is unnecessary. So perhaps it would be better ca:"Repositori del codi" and es:"Repositorio del código", omitting "de MediaWiki". I have not used these two translations not differentiate too much from the English version.
  • "Get MediaWiki", the content of the referred page is "Download MediaWiki" -> ca:"Descàrrega de MediaWiki" and es:"Descarga de MediaWiki". So, I think that would change the title of the item for en:"Download MediaWiki".
  • The denomination for "Get extensions". The type of content of this page is very different from the "Get MediaWiki", its description indicates "lists information and pages relating to extensions", not as "Get" = "Download". Then the previous description is too long. So, I think that would change the title of the item for en:"MediaWiki extensions".
  • "Support" = ca:"Suport" or ca:"Assistència" and ca:"Soporte" or ca:"Asistencia". I prefer ca:"Suport" instead of ca:"Assistència", since the semantic field of assistance is more narrow than support in Catalan and Spanish languages.
  • "Bug tracker": no problem in translation (in Bugzilla bug tracker is translated as "seguiment d'errors"; id in Spanish Wikipedia).
  • "Browse categories": "Navegar categorías" is an incorrect translation, lack a preposition "por" -> es:"Navegar por categorías", is equivalent to es:"Buscar por categorías".
  • "Sandbox": No "official" word translation to Catalan or Spanish for "sandbox". "Sand box" or ca:"Caixa de sorra" es:"Caja de arena" does not have the meaning that it may have in the computer world. So I used a translation by a colleague in a template in Catalan Wikipedia.

The translation is not always easy (as you know), I always try to obtain the closest phrase to what it describes.

--Jmarchn (talk) 18:20, 13 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

I've forgotten:

  • FAQ translation -> ca:"Preguntes freqüents" and es:"Preguntas frecuentes".
  • Also, in main page, after "For general questions about MediaWiki see the communication page or ask at the support desk.", the item "Baixa-te'l" should be changed for "Baixeu-vos-el"; this is due to the treatment of "vos", that does not exist in English, and more correct and counseled by translation guides (Guia d'estil de Softcatalà).
  • In the same location to prior paragraph -> "Contribuir" -> "Com contribuir" (same title as item of the sidebar; ca:"Com" = en:"How").

A barnstar for you![edit]

The Technical Barnstar
Imagine a world in which {{REVISIONUSER}} could be filled into an edit window as part of the preloaded text. Thanks for writing https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/158906/ I hope to be taking advantage of it soon. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 21:16, 12 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
@Whatamidoing (WMF): Thanks! Side note: This is the most useful barnstar I've ever received, as it revealed a bug in EchoWikiLove which I'll be filing shortly. Jackmcbarn (talk) 21:31, 12 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Starting conversion of LiquidThreads to Flow at mediawiki.org[edit]

Hello. I'm sending this to you, because you've been one of the top 50 users of LQT on mediawiki.org over the last 360 days,[1] and I wanted to make sure that you'd seen the announcement at Starting conversion of LiquidThreads to Flow at mediawiki.org. There are links in the topic-summary at the top, for other discussions (wikitech-l and Project:Current_issues), and a link to the planned process and timeline (scheduled to begin April 6, with smaller conversions at first). Please do test Flow out at Talk:Sandbox if you haven't tried it recently, and give any feedback/suggestions/requests at that main discussion location. Much thanks, Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 23:46, 27 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Skin:Metrolook allow ip to edit[edit]

Hi please unlock Skin:Metrolook so that ips can edit again along with unblocking Extension:CollapsibleVector Since I haven't done anything I should not have. Paladox2017 (talk) 13:20, 30 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

I don't see what that would accomplish, other than making it more likely that you'll edit while logged out. Jackmcbarn (talk) 03:48, 31 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

I am updating Template:Documentation/pt-br[edit]

Hi I am going to update Template:Documentation/pt-br to use module like the en version does I will be re using translations already there. I am telling you because last time I was blocked because I updated templates so much and in different language. It needs a refresh look to match en version. Please revert and message me if I shoulden update it again Paladox2017 (talk) 17:12, 8 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

@Paladox2017: Reverted again, for the same reason I told you last time you "updated" that template: Module:Documentation is designed to be configured with a /config subpage, but you insist on duplicating the code as well. Please do this the right way so that the code isn't duplicated, or if you don't know how to do that, tell me what benefit updating that template on this wiki would bring, and I'll do it. (Matching the look of enwiki is not a good enough reason.) Jackmcbarn (talk) 21:08, 8 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
Hi sorry I forgot since it was a while ago but benefits are easer translations. The template is maintained at enwiki meaning updates that improve things such as features fixes bugs and other things. But the module is meant to support easer translations. Paladox2017 (talk) 22:23, 8 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

How we will see unregistered users[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

IMPORTANT: Admin activity review[edit]

Hello,

I hope that this message finds you well.

A global policy regarding the removal of advanced permissions (e.g.: administrator, bureaucrat, interface-admin, etc.) from inactive user accounts was adopted by community consensus in 2013. For that policy, inactivity is defined as having zero edits and zero administrative actions in a particular project for the last two years.

I am writing to you today because, to the best of our knowledge, your account has advanced permissions in mediawiki.org and meets the inactivity criteria from the global policy mentioned above.

Please reply at this Village Pump topic if you wish to keep all or some of your advanced permissions. If the community supports your continued access, your permissions will be kept. To the contrary, if you wish to resign all or some of your advanced permissions, you may request a removal of permissions on Meta-Wiki.

Please note that if there is no response from you by 2023-03-26, your advanced permissions on mediawiki.org will be removed by the stewards without further notice. You may regaing them using the usual local process.

If you have any questions, please let me know, or feel free to message us at the stewards' noticeboard.

Yours sincerely, --MA (talk) (via MassMessage) 17:14, 25 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
