No-break space (& nbsp;)

How do I enter a no-break space (& nbsp;) into the source text via the keyboard? Something like Ctrl+Space would be nice … And, BTW, can I see the difference between a regular space and a no-break space?

Thanks for the feedback, request added here:

On Mac, Option Space gives a non-breaking space. And Ctrl Space is already taken by the OS.

In Visual Editor?

Elitre (WMF) (talkcontribs)

Hi Fram, I was going to reply on en.wp. I don't think there's a way to do this currently, and I believe it also can't be added via the character inserter now. Will add this to the list of things I'm asking James ASAP, thanks.

Fram (talkcontribs)

Thanks. I only replied here because Nnemo seemed to have misunderstood the question (i.e. not how do I insert a non-breaking space, but how do I insert a non-breaking space in VisualEditor. Thanks for confirming my suspicion.

Option Space gives a space on Mac. It is standard — and easy. It is something that is supposed to work in all applications — and it does.

Whatamidoing (WMF) (talkcontribs)

When I checked just now (in Safari), it appears that VisualEditor is turning them into plain spaces. Do you have a diff of it working correctly?

Nnemo (talkcontribs)

In editing the source, it works correctly. As well as here in this message. Your feedback just now tells that the VisualEditor is broken — and that's too bad.

Nnemo (talkcontribs)

On Mac, “inserting a non-breaking space in the VisualEditor” is not supposed to be different from “inserting a non-breaking space”.

On my Mac, I don’t have a “VisualEditor”. I have Safari, and Firefox.

I know how to use my Mac. I don’t have to learn the tricks of all applications and all Web sites. I expect my keys to work normally.

Nnemo (talkcontribs)

In the VisualEditor, I expect this to work.

Otherwise, the VisualEditor would be broken, and I would avoid it.

Yes, we need a change at that bug. What we need is for James F to change its status from "Assigned" to "Resolved–Fixed". wink

Surely this bug file https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=51045 has to be changed.

Primo : On Mac we press Option Space to write a non-breaking space. Not Ctrl Space.

Secundo : On Mac Ctrl Space is already taken, it brings Spotlight.

Tertio : On Win I am used to pressing Ctrl Shift Space, which writes a non-breaking space in Word. It would be nice to have that work. Of course, the standard headache Window$ way Alt 255 has to work.

Whatamidoing (WMF) (talkcontribs)

Spotlight is Command-Shift, not Control-Shift, on my Mac.

This depends a bit, there are extensions that change this if you install them and if you use multilingual setup then command space can switch keyboard language instead for instance.
