Currently obsolete

This template is currently unused on the wiki. The main page (where it used to be located) currently has its news in-line, and there is a separate News page that contains the full news history. This behaviour may change in the future.

In the meantime, it is still worth updating the page here, as people are using it for translation.

Meaning of icon

Currently, the icon Image:Attention niels epting.svg does not have an alternative text associated with it on the news page, and the image page does not describe what it means. I can guess that red and an exclamation mark means "danger", but shouldn't the guesswork be removed? AGrimm 15:14, 9 April 2007 (UTC)

News page synced with social media

There is a proposal to update this News template (and therefore the mediawiki.org homepage) with broadly the same entries we are having in the MediaWiki social media channels. See the @MediaWiki timeline in identi.ca to check the kind of news we are talking about.

We could start doing this manually and if we are happy about the result we could think of a way to have it automated via RSS/Atom syndication. Please discuss in this thread.--Qgil (talk) 21:22, 6 January 2013 (UTC)

I think it is a very bad idea to spam this page with anything beside announcements of (security) updates. The rss feed was a very convinient way to stay informed on necessary updates. The second way is easier to scan and works better when items are wrapped (since each item begins with a bullet point), plus it takes a little less space horizontally, so items are less likely to be wrapped. - dcljr (talk) 09:47, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
