  • Hi, I havent searched to deeply but I wish there was a section about how to backup mediawiki. For instance is a database dump adequate for completely restoring the wiki after a server fail?
  • Also, another issue to be covered could be administering individual articles (moving, protecting, etc.), because I cannot find protection instructions anywhere. Jonathon Reinhart

Probably not, but if you're willing to develop and support it we could include the files. Most likely it would see the same fate as Oracle support, though; incomplete, unused, unsupported, untested, unmaintained, eventually getting disabled beacuse it doesn't work anymore and then removed entirely. --Brion VIBBER 22:24, 16 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] what administrative chores are required when running a mediawiki?

Mediawiki was recently recommended to me as a stable and full featured wiki. One of the areas of interest I have concerns what kinds of regular actions are needed by sysadmins in running the wiki.

Another has to do with locating utilities so that one can take a series of files and pre-load/populate a wiki with them.

Thanks for any tips you might provide.

Hey...I just installed the newest version of MediaWiki and have the homepage in progress. I noticed the tab says article whereas on Wikipedia and elsewhere it says Main Page. How can I change my main page to say that on the tab instead of article?

The above sentence on the page can be confusing considering that the page is protected from editing by people who haven't signed in. 1. How to enforce the user to create account before adding or editing pages?

2. Is there a way to include Turing test (user has to type in the letters from the image) when user creates an account?

3. Right now I have to add < br > at the end of every line. Is there a way around that (other than adding two line breaks?)

[edit] Editing the editing page?

I have been looking for a way to edit the edit page of my MediaWiki. I wanted to add a box like on Wikipedia that allows insertion of various symbols, e.g. Greek letters. I'd also want to know how I can add all those extra buttons that Wikipedia has above the editing box to my MediaWiki site.

I haven't found this information anywhere though.

I'm using MediaWiki 1.10.x.

[edit] Is there security to view edits before they post?

Is there a way to setup the wiki to email changes or a notification of changes before they are posted for all to see? Or do I have to clean up posts as soon as possible after they're posted?

"moderation" like that is contrary to the idea of a wiki. Generally the way to deal with vandalism & cruft is: revert it. -- Duesentrieb 20:52, 15 October 2007 (UTC)

I'd like to use MediaWiki as a kind of a CMS on my website (taking account of all vices and virtues of such a step).

Can I change the interface language ($wgLanguageCode) on fly and have a duplicated (or multiplicated) versions of the pages work in dependence of the language chosen by the user?

I couldn't find a solution to my problem... I have implemented my own wiki using mediawiki-1.11.1 and want to add this moderator functionality in this.. where in the editted pages by the other users shall not directly get updated but should be brought to my notice first(moderator).. then after the decision of moderator they should be either approved or denied...kindly help me out by letting me know that is there any way to do so by either doing some modification in the pages of mediawiki or by adding some other code... thanks..Manas

Is there an online demo so I can see how the administrative side of the software works? I'd like to know how I would administer it before I take the time to download it so that I can determine if this software is "the one." I'm looking for something for my intranet that does this type of thing, but there are many, many different ones available and I want to quickly determine if this is going to work for me.
