Talk:Starter kit

About this board

This page seems to only focus developers (apart from a "Translation" section). Hence its scope is already covered by How to become a MediaWiki hacker (developers) and How to contribute (general). Hence I propose to move any potential unique content from this page to one of these two pages and delete this page, after checking "what links here". (Obviously I believe that we have too many pages targetting 'starters'.) Comments?

The idea of this page was:

  1. How to contribute is the main landing page, providing an overview of the different areas. It contains a link to Starter Kit.
  2. Starter Kit summarizes the essential information for new developers, offering a quick overview to what is explained in a dozen different pages, linked here.

I still don't think How to become a MediaWiki hacker is a good landing page for newcomers. Before touching Starter kit or these other pages, I believe that we should a plan for the future main pages for newcomers.

The existing help pages, for editing, are based on using the (old) wikitext editor, not VisualEditor. Do you plan to create parallel documentation pages, and let editors decide whether to do wikitext or VE editing? Or is there some other "cutover" plan?

I just started with a rough skeleton and I will come back to it later. Your edits there are as welcome as your questions here.

What answers and pointers for newcomers would you like to see in that page?

I'm curious as to where user profiles fit into all this. As I understand it, they're not close to being implemented with SMW, right? Regardless, I think having a new contributor create their own profile with information on what they can do and are looking to contribute is useful, so I would say for now we could encourage new contributors to create a profile on the User page. Would that go in this Starter Kit?
