Googlebot spam (cloaking?)

We are running MediaWiki 1.18.2 PHP 5.3.5 (cgi-fcgi) MySQL 5.1.53-log

Our site has been infected by some kind of malware such that pages retrieved by conventional browser user agents are perfectly normal, however pages retrieved by googlebot user agent contain spam. The result being that our Google search results have spurious spam titles and abstracts. Using Google webmaster tools I have seen the page 'as seen by Google' and it starts as follows:

HTTP/1.1 200 OK Date: Thu, 24 May 2012 23:53:55 GMT Server: Apache X-Content-Type-Options: nosniff Content-Encoding: gzip Vary: Accept-Encoding Content-length: 38024 Keep-Alive: timeout=2, max=100 Connection: Keep-Alive Content-Type: text/html <!DOCTYPE html> <html lang="en" dir="ltr" class="client-nojs"> <meta name="keywords" content="cheap,cialis,no,prescription,buy,cialis,online,pill,shop,safe,and,secure."> <meta name="description" content="Cheap cialis no prescription, buy cialis - Online pill store, great deals!! Check order status. 100% satisfaction guaranteed!"> <head> <title>Cheap Cialis No Prescription, Buy Cialis - Online Pill Shop, Safe And Secure.</title> <meta charset="UTF-8" /> <meta name="generator" content="MediaWiki 1.18.2" />

Where should I be looking to find the infection? I assume there is some code or configuration which allows user-agent-dependant meta tags or content to be generated.

Many thanks Rob

Reupload MediaWiki, making sure first that there are no unwanted additions to LocalSettings.php. Have fresh backups at hand next time.

Max Semenik (talk)14:21, 25 May 2012

No good idea. You should first find out, how the attacker infected your wiki. Just replacing the sourcecode is only curing the symptoms, but not the cause. That way you will likely get infected again: Maybe in two months, maybe in two weeks or maybe just tommorrow.

You should search all your files in your installation for one of these spam words like "cialis". This should give you a clue of which files in fact are the ones infected.

Maybe the change dates of the files also help: Everything, which was changed when the infected files were changed, is likely to be malicious as well.

403 Forbidden error upon return

I installed and set up the extension.
When I try to login, I'm redirected to the Google login page (first time to my domain login page, but on later test to the standard login... nevermind, that's not the problem now).
I'm then asken to authorize mi URL site. Everything looks good so far.
But when I'm supposed to return to the site I get this:

Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /wiki/Especial:Entrar on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

(the "Especial:Entrar" is because the site is in spanish)

or

Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /index.php on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Depending on the URL I use.

I set the 777 permission to the whole extension folder and its child files/folder. Just in case.
Any idea?

186.19.202.20222:43, 24 May 2012

Hi, the 404 error looks like the wiki is not fully configured - htaccess issue or something similar. Maybe a URL is misconstructed somewhere (a media wiki setup should never give you a 404, it should create a page at the minimum)... Other than that I can't really tell, I haven't encountered this error myself...!

internal error 500 after upgrade from 1.16 to 1.19

Display problems on chrome and firefox!

Hello all, I need help, recently, when opening me wiki on firefox I just had the pages displaying like this: http://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/2012/21/1337855786-Chromeandfirefoxnotworking.jpg I tried going to google chrome, and it was working correctly, but only for one day. Today it was the same problem as in firefox. So I tried internet explorer (yup!) and... it was working correctly: http://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/2012/21/1337855793-IEworking.jpg

I'm using mediawiki 1.18.2 , with extensions like semantic mediawiki, but since the problem, I didn't do anything. Except writing pages. But I did not install some new things. Also, I did do CCleaner juste in case, but it did not solved the issue. Also, I tried on other PC and it's working correctly, so the problem is probably from my PC.

So if someone know why it display like this, what could cause something like that, help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Franck1986 (talk)10:50, 24 May 2012

What you see in Firefox/Chrome seems to be like your stylesheets do no longer get loaded. So I would check the source code in the browser and see what happens, when you try to open one of the stylesheets.

As you describe the problem (first it worked in both browsers, then still in one and now in none), this might well be a caching issue. My guess is: Clear the cache in IE and it will be broken there as well.

88.130.70.20716:09, 24 May 2012

When i check the source code, I have... the source code of the page. The beggining is something like this:

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html lang="en" dir="ltr" class="client-nojs">
<head>
<title></title>
<meta charset="UTF-8" />
<meta name="generator" content="MediaWiki 1.18.2" />
<link rel="alternate" type="application/x-wiki" title="Edit" href="/w
/index.php?title=Main_Page& amp;action=edit" />
<link rel="edit" title="Edit" href="/w/index.php?title=Main_Page&action=edit" />
<link rel="apple-touch-icon" href="/w/apple-touch-icon.png" />
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="/w/favicon.ico" />
<link rel="search" type="application/opensearchdescription+xml" href="/w/opensearch_desc.php"
title="" />
<link rel="EditURI" type="application/rsd+xml" href="/w/api.php?action=rsd" />
<link rel="alternate" type="application/atom+xml" title="Atom feed" href="/w
/index.php?title=Special:RecentChanges&feed=atom" />
<link rel="stylesheet" href="/w/load.php?debug=false&lang=en&
amp;modules=mediawiki.legacy.commonPrint%2Cshared%7Cskins.vector&only=styles&
amp;skin=vector&*" />
<meta name="ResourceLoaderDynamicStyles" content="" />
<link rel="stylesheet" href="/w/load.php?debug=false&lang=en&modules=site&
amp;only=styles&skin=vector&*" />

This is only the beggining, it's like 500 lines long... It's visibly the same for the 2 wikis and for all browser. (as far as i have checked) But how do i try to open stylesheets? (And where?) Also, I have 2 wikis (one in english, one in french) and now... the french one is working correctly on all browsers ( I.E. , firefox and chrome), but the english one only in I.E. and not on firefox and chrome (by the way, I clear all cache from I.E., but it's like yesterday.).

Also, dunno if it's important, but the "favicon" of the english wiki... is gone. (at least does not appear on the url, cause it's in the mediawiki folder).

Well, anyway, the most important thing now is the display. So if you (or someone else) have any idea , i thank you from the bottom of my heart.

How to backup MySQL db using phpMyAdmin

Hi

Could anyone explain why using the method below I am not able to backup fully? Mysql.5.1.36 = 1.75GB on my computer. Backup of mediawiki.sql = 482.830kb.

Siteground: MySQL Export: How to backup a MySQL database using phpMyAdmin

Cheers

Ron Barker (talk)09:19, 24 May 2012

If you say you are using phpMyAdmin I would think that the process just times out before the whole DB has been written. You can identify this case, when the SQL dunmp does not end with a line saying "-- dump finished on May 24th 2012, 17:45" or something like that.

88.130.70.20716:06, 24 May 2012

Thank you for that

I am sure that you are correct. I am not so sure where to find the line "dump finished...." etc. unless you mean the message you get after downloading. I get the message download complete.

However,I understand from researching the internet that using phpMyAdmin cannot handle large databases. That appears to the case.

Kind regards

Ron Barker (talk)07:50, 25 May 2012

This line should be in the dump file, which phpMyAdmin creates. Open it with a text editor and you will see that it is human-readable. It "only" contains the SQL commands, which are needed to create your tables and to put your content in them. Scroll to the very bottom of the file and check the last lines.

> However,I understand that using phpMyAdmin cannot handle large databases.

That is right. Reason are restrictions in the PHP settings on the server like the maximum execution time. You wrote that you have the database with 1,75GB "on your computer". Then you will be able to create the dump without phpMyAdmin: This works with the tool "mysqldump", which comes with MySQL. Use it like this: "mysqldump -u my-mysql-username -pmy-mysql-password -h my-mysql-host my-database > dump.sql".

88.130.113.18421:19, 25 May 2012

Thank you for taking the time to respond. I am afraid that your efforts go above my head. I have no idea where to find the 'dump file' you refer to, not that it matters really as I am sure you are correct. As to the tool, I have no idea what you mean. Thank you anyway.

Kind regards

It's a kind of library that can be used by other extension. It does not provide functionality on it's own.S

It appears that the problem started with this edit. See if you can get the templates fixed first. I noted that there are no custom stylesheets/javascript (ie MediaWiki:common.css et al.) but you should check these too when style problems occour.

Is it possible to translate other wikis pages on our wiki?

Hi, i' m administrator of a community (Arch Linux Turkiye) wiki. Our wiki heavily based on ArhWiki translations and i need to know if we can use this extension for our page content translations. As in extension features description already menitoned; our main problem is catching original content changes on our translations. So, we need to track those changes. Is it possible to install this extension on our wiki and configure it to track changes made on ArchWiki pages? There is no hope to see this extension got installed on ArchWiki anytime soon. If it can be done, how can we achieve this? I' ve read extension documention but (if i did not missed it somewhere) i couldn't find a clue about this. Thanks. -- tarakbumba <tarakbumba@gmail.com>

95.15.40.10112:31, 20 May 2012

Hi,

This extension can be used both for documentation translation and for software translation if it's configured correctly. Are you talking about documentation translation or about translation of program interface?

Amir E. Aharoni (talk)14:48, 20 May 2012

I'm talking about wiki page translations. ArchWiki page ---> Our wiki. As i mentioned above, we need to track original ArchWiki pages changes. If it is possible...

95.15.36.21919:28, 21 May 2012

Yes, it should be good for wiki page translation using the Page Translation feature. It has pretty good documentation here - Help:Extension:Translate and particularly Help:Extension:Translate/Page translation example and Help:Extension:Translate/Page translation administration. Feel free to ask if you have more questions.

Amir E. Aharoni (talk)19:32, 21 May 2012

Sorry for my misunderstanding but as i read documentation; i suppose translate extension should be installed source wiki (in this case ArchWiki) and all translations should be placed there. But we have seperate wiki (in this case Arch Linux Turkiye Belgeleri) and we can only manage this wiki. Is it possible to use translate extension or not? That's the main point i need to know and i can not find a clue on documentation that it is possible. Sorry if i miss something -- tarakbumba <tarakbumba@gmail.com>

95.15.10.1110:22, 25 May 2012

It is assumed that the source texts and the translations are in the same wiki when Translate extension is used.

How to title my pages? Looking for a good methodic...

I'm creating a new wiki, including many categories. (Its inside my intranet, so I can't show it to you, sorry!)

But I've got a problem with entitling my pages: For example my first category is called "vehicles". It includes pages like "car", "plane" and "bike". In my second category I'd like to give examples for different vehicles. Because pages like "car", "plane" and "bike" already exist, I have to choose other titles. So I'll name them "example of cars" "example of planes" and "example of bikes". But I've got another problem now: Listing all pages in this category, you'll find everything sorted by the first letter. So all pages begin with "E - example of ...". That isn't very nice and not useful.

How can I solve it?

My first idea was creating namespaces, so I can create more pages with the same name. But I don't want to create a namespace for every category. Have you got another idea?

Thank you

Does this code really work??

Edited by another user.
Last edit: 19:23, 21 May 2012

I saw following code in http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Skinning/Vector

<?php if ( $this->data['loggedin'] ) { ?>
 /* code to be used only when logged in */
<?php } ?>

My wiki is 1.19.0

I tried to write:

<?php if($this->data['loggedin']) {
 <div>let login user donate;</div>
} else {
 <div>show Ad Code to Anonymous</div>
}
?>

But it do not work too! What's wrong??

Zoglun (talk)01:29, 20 May 2012

I don't know why that code was placed there but it looks like it may belong in LocalSettings.php. You should test it outside of production first.

Allen4names (talk)05:05, 20 May 2012

This code will not work in LocalSettings.php, as $this->data is not set there at all.

In your skin you can use the condition

if($this->getUser()->isLoggedIn()) {
 // HTML Code for logged in users
} else {
 // Other code
}

I think this can be done with the Extension:Cite.

There is a Reflinks tool on the toolserver that can be linked to. There are inter-wiki extensions that may be useful.

I need help customizing the sidebar in Vector.css

I recently changed the skin for http://en.sturmkrieg.com with the Vector.css page with code from another Vector wiki as a guide. However, the sidebar at that wiki was setup differently, without collapsable tabs, and so there's an issue at Sturmkrieg. How can I set the Vector.css so that the names of each section aren't blue and they are a different color when the section is expanded?

Also, how to I stop there from being lines under the subsection titles and change the lone horizontal lines back to black?

Use the Firefox extension Firebug and inspect the DOM when you have the collapsed state and when you have the item expanded. I guess there should be different CSS ids or CSS classes which you can use to apply your different styles.

88.130.124.7711:17, 19 May 2012

Thanks. I tried that, but it's not clear what controls what. Is there particular code I should look for?

When you use Firebug there is this button with a mouse icon. After clicking it, you can mark a part of your page (e.g. a div container or so) by clicking at that container in your page. After that, Firebug will show you, which CSS styles are applied for that particular element.

88.130.126.23523:45, 19 May 2012

Ok. Thanks. At first I was thrown off since it was switching to HTML, but I saw that it showed the CSS next to it. This should definitely help.

How do I change the color of the inactive links that direct to non existent pages?

Links to new pages have the class "new". Adding a CSS rule with something like

mw-content-text a.new {color: green;}

should work.

88.130.126.23523:34, 19 May 2012

Thanks. I found the section that controls the "red" link color.

Which of these controls the user links up at the very top, and the three footer links at the bottom? I am looking to change them to a color other than red while leaving the in-article links the same color.

a,
a:visited,
div#content a.extiw,
div#content a.extiw:visited,
div#content a.external,
div#content a.external:visited,
#preferences td.htmlform-tip, #contentSub,
#contentSub2,
div.vectorTabs li.selected a,
div.vectorTabs li.selected a:visited,
#preferences legend,
#preftoc li.selected a  {
   color: #620000;
}

The links "page", "discussion", "history" and so on are in two div containers. They had the IDs "right-navigation" and "left-anvigation" or so. The different links maybe then are wrapped in divs with the class "vectorTabs".

88.130.103.13817:36, 20 May 2012

Thanks.

Actually, I'm still having trouble. Is there any way to have the top links for user page, user talk page, preferences, contributions, and that stuff and the three information links in the footer be different colors from the rest of the internal links?

You should learn some CSS. Then you will see that you can do that by combining CSS classes.

a { color: green; }
.footer a { color: red;}

The above will make all links green, except the ones in an element with the class "footer" (these links will be red).

Mobile Search Broken

Search on the mobile side of the extension is broken for me, but there appears to be a problem with MediaWiki's API. Below is an example that compares my API with the API on Wikipedia. Both API params are exactly the same.

http://wiki.kappakappagamma.org/api.php?action=opensearch&format=xml&search=kappa
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=opensearch&format=xml&search=kappa

As you can see the first URL returns back a JSON result rather than a xml result. Wikipedia has the correct result. I did not make any edits to the API of my installation so I am curious on why this is occuring. Does anyone else experience this?

Trouble to find words in pages that are inside a custom namespace

I am having trouble to find words in pages that are inside a custom namespace.

I have installed Sphinx and SphinxSearch and it seems to be working, the queries are definitely going from the MediaWiki UI to the sphinx daemon, I executed "searchd.exe" in the console, and it is receiving the words that I type in the mediawiki search box.

If I type a word that exists in the main page, then it finds the main page, but if I type a word that is in a page with a custom namespace, then nothing... mediawiki just gives the option to create a new page, and nothing more.

I am sure that the word I am searching is there, and that sphinx can find it. If I execute "search.exe" and try to find the very same words, it says that it exists in some documents with a lot of hits.

I am executing this:

   search -c C:\Sphinx\sphinx.conf -i wiki_main -e "equip"

and it returns this:

   displaying matches:
   1. document=5, weight=2620, page_namespace=3000, page_is_redirect=0, old_id=11,
   category=()
           page_title=Equipe
           page_namespace=3000
   2. document=4, weight=1620, page_namespace=3000, page_is_redirect=0, old_id=12,
   category=()
           page_title=Principal
           page_namespace=3000
   words:
   1. 'equip': 2 documents, 4 hits

Notice that it knows about my custom namespace that have the id=3000.

If I try to search for the same thing using MediaWiki search box, the search daemon shows this:

   [Fri May 18 11:20:44.101 2012] 0.004 sec [ext2/1/rel 0 (0,20)] [*] equip

That means that it is receiving the "equip" word from the search box. But MediaWiki just says that there is no results, and suggests that I create the page.

What is wrong?

Why I cannot find the same results from "search.exe", by using MediaWiki search box?

Thanks!

200.251.63.314:27, 18 May 2012

Are you sure your custom namespace is selected? By default, MW searches only a limited set of namespaces. You need to change your search preferences, or use "Everything" or "Advanced" tabs to search additional namespaces.

Svemir Brkic (talk)15:00, 18 May 2012

This might be of interest default namespaces setting.
