User:MeikoBot[edit]

Requested user-rights: Bot.

I'd like to have this account of mine (verify ownership) be made a bot so that it can perform basic cosmetic changes to pages, carefully of course, using pywikibot. --GeorgeBarnick (talk) 01:15, 8 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Edit: Maybe I could also have it periodically clean the sandbox? It seems like this isn't something that's done by a bot consistently, so I could have it done by a bot too. --GeorgeBarnick (talk) 03:21, 8 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support Don't see why not. --Goldenburg111 (talk) 01:16, 8 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Can you please be more specific about what kinds of changes? Why do you need a bot for it?--Jasper Deng (talk) 01:17, 8 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
    • It'd be using Pywikibot's cosmetic_changes.py script, where it would automatically go through pages and show me what it wants to change, and I'd manually say "yes" or "no" to it. What the script does is fix some basic syntax issues or common mistakes people make in wikisyntax, for example it'd change [[Example|examples]] to just [[example]]s. --GeorgeBarnick (talk) 01:20, 8 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
      • So if I understand correctly, then it's like en:WP:AWB, for which I don't think you'd need a bot account for.--Jasper Deng (talk) 01:21, 8 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
        • Yes. The only reason I figured it'd be best to have as a bot would be to not flood the recent changes and/or peoples' watchlists. Since it is automated/semi-automated (depending on how it's run), it can make many edits in a short timeframe, which I'm sure you can imagine can get obnoxious it it weren't flagged as a bot edit. --GeorgeBarnick (talk) 01:23, 8 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'm fine with this, giving it a few days for other people to voice their opinions otherwise I'll go ahead and +bot it. Even if manually driven, having the bot flag is nice to avoid the RC flood as well as since it has the potential to hit user talk pages. --Skizzerz 04:48, 8 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Will the bot be making only cosmetic wikicode changes that don't create a display difference or will there be noticeable changes to the display of the pages? Peachey88 (talk) 09:04, 21 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
    • It shouldn't make any display changes. I'll also be doing what I can to make sure it doesn't mess up translation pages, but it shouldn't be able to do that. Like I said, I'll be keeping a close eye on it and manually telling it which pages to edit for a while just to see where any possible problems with it may be. Once any possible problems are worked out, I'd let it be more automated. But starting out, it will be semi-automatic so I'll make sure it doesn't make any mistakes. --GeorgeBarnick (talk) 14:56, 22 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
