Wikimedia has participated in Outreachy since 2013. Outreachy provides internships in open source and open science, to people subject to systemic bias and impacted by underrepresentation in the technical industry where they are living. It is a three-month, full-time internship and runs two editions every year. It is overseen by Wikimedia's Developer Advocacy team. Wikimedia provides funding for Outreachy internships. - September 16, 2015: participating organizations are announced
- September 16 - November 2, 2015: applicants need to get in touch with at least one project and make a small contribution related to the proposed project
- September 29, 2015: application system opens
- November 2, 2015: application deadline at 7pm UTC
- November 17, 2015: accepted participants announced on this page at 7pm UTC
- November 17 - December 7, 2015: community bonding period for accepted participants
- December 7, 2015 - March 7, 2016: internship period
Candidates[edit]
If you want to be a candidate for this, you must read and follow Outreach programs/Life of a successful project#Coming up with a proposal. In summary:
- Find, or create, a Phabricator project task that interests you, and create a subtask of it that as your proposal task.
Repeating some of that here,
- You should create an account on Phabricator using your wiki username (Create a wiki account if you don't have one)
- find an interesting project task in phab:tag/possible-tech-projects (or elsewhere)
- click 'Create Subtask' link to create a new Phabricator task for your proposal:
- it will be "Blocked By" the task you are applying for
- and will be associated with the project of the task you're applying for
- title it "Outreachy proposal for project task", replacing project task with the name of the task you are applying for
- add the project for the mentor program (#Outreachy-Round-11) and remove the project for the tech projects (#Possible-Tech-Projects)
- use the Outreach programs/Application template to create a solid proposal task
- Edit and improve your proposal task until the deadline. A well-structured proposal increases your chances of being accepted. Sample proposals (from our past rounds): T93106 and T76199.

Wikipedia has become the fifth most-visited site in the world, used by more than 400 million people every month in more than 270 languages. Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata and Wiktionary are some of the other free content projects hosted by Wikimedia thanks to MediaWiki. There is also a wide collection of open source software projects around them.
Much more can be done: stabilize infrastructure, increase participation, improve quality, increase reach, encourage innovation.

Project ideas[edit]
- Look through the Phabricator workboards in possible-tech-projects and outreach-programs-projects for project ideas
- Post in the task comments, ask intelligent and explicit questions ("Could you tell me more about this?" is a bad example), do your research thoroughly, don't expect spoon-feeding. That's the recipe for a perfect intern!
