This is user documentation for Narayam Input Method tool functionality. Technical documentation for the Narayam extension is also available.

The Narayam input method tool allows you to input text using a keyboard mapping different from the layout used on an International keyboard. This is particularly useful for non-latin scripts. Installing and configuring input methods in the operating systems may not be easy or convenient for many editors. This tool aims to provide the popular and standard input methods in many languages in MediaWiki itself. The tool works in all editable text fields of MediaWiki.

[edit] Usage

Narayam Input Method Menu

The tool will be available along with the top user preferences links as shown in the screenshot. Clicking on the "Input Method" link will show a menu with available input methods.

[edit] Enabling and Disabling the input method

If the Input tool is enabled, you will see a small icon with a pen, if it is disabled, icon will have a red cross on the icon. To enable the tool, you can use the keyboard shortcut Control+M. Or select the option "Enable" at the top of the menu. Once you enabled you will see that the icon changed. If the input method is active, the pen icon in the input method selector will be visible, and when selecting an input field, that input field will have a faint blue background. When the input method is disabled, the pen icon will be crossed, and the input field background will be the usual (mostly white) colour.

Pressing Control+M will toggle between enabling and disabling. So while editing, you can use this shortcut key to switch the tool on and off without clicking on the menu.

[edit] Selecting an input method

The default input method of the wiki's content language will be enabled initially. You can select an input method from the menu according to your preference. If you want to switch to another input method while editing, that is possible. The input methods for other languages are available once you click the "More input methods" link. The recently used input methods will be available at the top of the menu.

Clicking on the "Help" link will take you to this help page or a custom configured help page.

[edit] Disabling the tool for your user account

To disable the Input method tool for your user account: "Preferences" ‎→ "Editing" ‎→ Uncheck option "Enable input method" ‎→ Click "Save" to save your settings.
