I haven't looked at the back end of this, but I'd like to point to this discussion that was had (a while ago!). This extension should be able to handle changes in style easily, i.e. without needing to bug any developers to tweak the settings.

Can we ensure that it comes with a built-in biblio metadata retrieval function? There is reliable on-line databases for ISBN, PMID, DOI etc. With the internet the metadata only ever needs to be typed in once ! Alan Liefting (talk) 02:17, 21 February 2012 (UTC)

Is there any documentation of what parameters are available and what they indicate? Likewise, defining what each of the flag and type keywords do would be very helpful.

One easy way to do this would be to provide a page of examples, eg Extension:WikiCitation/Examples. This could either link to another mediawiki instance which runs WikiCitation, or could be some raw code which would demonstrates common usecases were it to be copied to a wiki running WikiCitation.
