The compatibility project is a volunteer effort to test MediaWiki with various GNU/Linux/PHP/MySQL/PostgreSQL/memcache/etc versions as well as MediaWiki's extensions with various MediaWiki and PHP/etc versions and make sure they can work together, ie that they are compatible.
Such checks are routine in big enterprises as part of quality assurance programmes that want to ensure that their software components can co-exist.
